Week-Long Shooting Incidents Leave Multiple Injured, Three Dead in Newark

Police in Newark are continuing to investigate a week-long set of separate shooting incidents around the city in the last ten days. 

About 11 shots that were fired connected on (8) eight victims leaving three of the injured fatally wounded since Friday, September 16, 2022. 

In the first incident, police responded to reports of shots fired inside a home on Schley Street, where they arrived and found a 13-year-old girl suffering a bullet wound in her head, according to Newark Police. 

The young victim was rushed to University Hospital, where she died around 5:27 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2022. 

According to a statement released by Newark Police, the unidentified girl suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

The following is a recap of the other shootings around Newark  since September 16, 2022: 

September 17: At approximately 3:20 a.m., gunfire erupted near 298 West Runyon Street. Police recovered shell casings and property damage. No injuries. 

September 18: Gunmen fired multiple rounds in the direction of two victims, striking both near 26 Ridgewood Avenue. East Orange resident Mr. Wayne Jones, 41, was killed in the encounter. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation.

September 18: At approximately 2:10 a.m., police responded to reports of shots fired near 57 Verona Avenue. Ballistics were recovered, but no victims were immediately reported. 

September 20: A Shot Spotter device alerted police of gunfire in the single-digit block of Elliot Street around 12:15 a.m. Police found two victims struck by bullets. Non-fatal injuries were reported. The suspects reportedly fled the scene. 

September 20: A Shot Spotter device activated and alerted police of gunfire in the vicinity of Hunterdon Street and 18th Avenue around midnight. No victims and the suspect led the scene. 

September 21: Officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation near the intersection of Broad Street and Lincoln Park shortly before 8 p.m. The suspects fled the scene and remained at large. 

September 22: Officers responded to reports of shots fired near 317 Broadway shortly before 3:50 a.m. The victim suffered non-fatal injuries. No arrests were reported. 

September 22: Police responded to reports of shots fired near 52 Miller Street, prompting an investigation around 11:15 p.m. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed one male fatality. No arrests. 

September 22: Gunfire erupted near 145 South 10th Street around 3:52 p.m. One person suffered non-fatal injuries. The suspect reportedly fled the scene. 

September 24: Police recovered live rifle rounds at the scene of the shooting in the 80's block of Lincoln Park shortly before 2:40 a.m. Property damage was confirmed after a bullet struck a building. No injuries. 

Just outside of the weeklong shooting spree, on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, Mr. Kyle Eley, 50, suffered multiple bullet wounds to several parts of his body after a gunman fired at him near the Bradley Court Housing projects. He was pronounced dead and The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the shooting.
