BREAKING: Severe Injuries Reported for Teen Girl Shot in Newark’s South Ward

Police assisted in escorting a teenage girl to the hospital after she was found shot in a section of Newark's South Ward Friday evening. 

Officers responded to reports of shots fired at an address in the 200 block of Schley Street around 11:30 p.m. and arrived to find a girl around 13-years-old suffering a bullet wound in her head. 

Police have not released many details about the incidents, but a weapon was recovered at the scene and other children were at the address as well. 

The unidentified girl was taken to University Hospital in critical condition. 

There were no other confirmed details regarding the incident and police have not immediately announced an arrest. 

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified of the shooting. 

UPDATE 2:22 a.m. : Police are reporting this as an accidental self-inflicted shooting.
