South 19th Street Shooting Seriously Injures Woman in Newark

Newark

A woman suffered severe injuries due to a shooting that erupted in  Newark's West Ward Saturday.

The late Christmas night shooting happened around 9:28 p.m. in the vicinity of 490 South 19th Street.

Police were notified of the shooting after a ShotSpotter activated in the book surrounded by the Hebrew Cemetery and over two dozen homes on the street.

Shooting

When police arrived, officers requested EMS to rush to the scene after finding the seriously injured victim suffering gunshot wounds.

Residents in the neighborhoods observed police canvass for additional victims and possible suspects through the yards and around the graveyard while EMS rushed the woman to University Hospital for treatment.

Police say there were no other injuries reported.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined at this time.

In other news, a short distance down the block, county law enforcement officials are offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect wanted for beating a man to death inside the Hebrew Cemetery early in the month.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said on December 8, the badly beaten body of Mr. Alexander Jones, 51, of Newark, was found lying near several headstones and close to a house.

Jones

Where Mr. Jones' body was found and how the cemetery sits slightly raised from the street, officials believe that someone had to have witnessed something.

Residents in the area told RLS Media that they had seen Mr. Jones in the area -multiple times- but most stopped short of saying if he lived in the community or why Jones was in the neighborhood.

The investigation for both incidents remains active and ongoing.
