Newark Pursuit Ends in Irvington; Suspect Wanted for Assault on Police Officer in Orange

A Newark high speed pursuit of a vehicle with occupants who were wanted for an aggravated assault on a police officer in Orange, ended in a late night crash, and arrest of a suspect in Irvington.

The incident originated in the area of North Lincoln Street in Orange, at around 4:45 p.m, when police attempted to pull over a vehicle that refused to stop.

According to reports, the vehicle, reported as a white Toyota Sienna, sped it's way out of Orange and onto Oraton Parkway, eventually entering the city of Newark where cops from Newark spotted the vehicle and began to join the pursuit.

The pursuit was terminated in the area of South 19th Street and 15th Avenue minutes later reports said.

Orange authorities reported that the suspect inside the vehicle purposely crashed into an officer's vehicle in an attempt to evade capture.

Newark Police units on routine patrol in the city's South Ward spotted the vehicle in the area of Hawthorne Avenue and Clintion Place at around 10:30 p.m. and attempted to pull the vehicle over.

The male driver of the suspected vehicle ignored officer's lights and sirens when he sped off blowing several stop signs and traffic signals.

Police continued to follow the vehicle where it entered the township of Irvington and at times touching off in a portion of Maplewood reports said.

The pursuit came to an abrupt end when the suspect's vehicle crashed near the intersection of Sanford Avenue and Clinton Avenue at around 11 p.m. with the suspect bailing from the vehicle.

With several officers in a foot pursuit, cops were able to chase the suspect down and place him under arrest a short distance away.

Emergency responders were called to the scene for the suspect who was injured during the incident.

There was a crashed that caused a vehicle to overturn in the 100 block of Mount Vernon Place but it is not immediately clear if the crash was caused due to the pursuit.

Back at the crash/pursuit scene, police located a weapon inside the vehicle according to reports.

There is an active investigation underway.
