As residents prepare to travel and visit loved ones during the holiday break, the Mountainside Police Department is reminding the community to take simple but effective steps to protect their homes and personal property.

According to Police Chief Joseph Giannuzzi, residents should avoid leaving their homes completely dark while away, as it can give the appearance that a residence is unoccupied.
Instead, homeowners are encouraged to use light timers or low-cost smart plugs to turn interior lights on and off at varying times.
The department also advises residents not to leave packages unattended on porches, as visible deliveries can attract theft.
Neighbors, friends, or family members can be asked to collect packages and keep an eye on the property during extended absences.
Chief Giannuzzi also recommended that residents check Ring doorbells and other security camera systems before leaving to ensure they are functioning properly and recording as intended.
Outdoor motion-activated security lights should be tested to confirm they are operational.
Before departing, residents are reminded to make sure all doors and windows are securely locked and that alarm systems are activated.

The Mountainside Police Department wishes all residents a happy, safe, and secure holiday season.
