Bronx Man Arrested for Aggravated Assault, Child Endangerment

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Jonathan Melendez, 27, of Bronx, NY on two counts of Aggravated Assault and two counts of Endangering The Welfare Of A Child.

Police say on Wednesday, October 23, the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP) contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit regarding twin infants who were admitted to Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ.

According to police the children were brought in by their mother because one of the twins appeared to be unresponsive.

Both infants were evaluated and found to have multiple fractures and head trauma.

An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit and the Teaneck Police Department determined that the infants had been in the custody of their biological father, Melendez when the injuries were sustained.

One of the infants is in stable condition and the other is in critical condition.

As a result of the investigation, on October 25, 2019, Melendez was arrested while at Hackensack University Medical Center and charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1B(1), both 2nd degree crimes, and two counts of Endangering The Welfare Of A Child, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4A(2), both 2nd degree crimes.

He was processed by the Teaneck Police Department and transported to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court scheduled for October 26, 2019 at 1:30 p.m.
