Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of Young Hwan Choi, 72, of Rochelle Park, on charges of Aggravated Assault and Unlicensed Practice of Medicine and Surgery.

According to authorities, in January the Palisades Park Police Department received a complaint from a victim alleging that Choi, owner of Shil La Barber Shop, performed a laser treatment on her face in November 2017. The surgery caused significant bodily injury including scars, which were visible on the victim’s face and chin.

As a result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit and the Palisades Park Police Department, it was determined that Choi is not a doctor and is not licensed to practice medicine and/or surgery. As a result, police arrested Choi on Jan. 25th in Rochelle Park and charged him with one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of Unlicensed Practice of Medicine and Surgery.

Officials say Choi is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Feb. 6th at 8:30 a.m.

This investigation is ongoing, and any individuals who suffered injuries as a result of Choi’s laser treatment are urged to contact the Palisades Park Police Department to report the incident.

Acting Prosecutor Calo states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
