Police chased down and reportedly apprehended a male suspect in the area of West Grand Street and Broad Street shortly before 10 p.m. who was possibly wanted for a shooting near a diner on Dowd Ave. overnight.
A hale of gunfire erupted near a gentlemen's night club that shares a large building with a diner at around 8 p.m. sending employees, customers and anyone in the area ducking and dodging for cover. A nearby McDonalds and diner had their customers and employees go into deep cover, protective mode after hearing repeated shots near their establishments.
According to several eyewitnesses on the scene, at least one gunman camouflaged himself around vehicles and continuously fired several rounds from a gun at that location. The witnesses said it was not clear who the gunman was shooting at or if there was more than one shooter.
Police rushed to the scene where they immediately setup a crime scene, searching the area for a possible shooter and victims. Arriving units found several vehicles and the building housing the gentlemen's club/diner had been struck by bullets.
Management at the diner decided to close the establishment for several hours because of shattered glass and other obstructions caused by the mayhem.
A nearby McDonalds and diner did not suffer damage from the shooting.
Authorities recovered at least 15 shell casings at the scene but fortunately there was no immediate reports of victims. It is not clear if the arrested suspect was the Dowd Ave. shooter since there was at least two other reports of shots fired in the city overnight.
Elizabeth Police are investigating.
