Authorities in Newark are investigating an early-morning shooting that left a man dead near an elementary school in the city.
Reports of shots fired that rang out at around 7:30 a.m. sent heavy police presence to the 200 block of South 9th Street near the 13th Ave. School where one person was shot and fatally injured according a spokesperson from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Residents in the area said he man was walking out of his house with his children when gunfire erupted .
