Firefighters Battle Overnight Blaze at Elizabeth Building

Elizabeth

By: Jeff Sommes

Firefighters in Elizabeth battled an overnight blaze early Sunday morning after flames broke out inside a building on Adams Avenue, sending heavy smoke pouring from the rear of the structure.

According to preliminary emergency reports, firefighters responded to a working fire at 732 Adams Avenue shortly before 1 a.m. on October 11, 2026.

Arriving crews encountered a fire in a second-floor room and immediately began attacking the flames.

As firefighters worked inside, heavy smoke filled portions of the building, prompting crews to request additional ventilation from the exterior.

Conditions became particularly challenging when firefighters reported a backdraft on the second floor.

Fire commanders requested a second hose line as crews positioned ladders near windows, secured utilities, and checked the attic, where heavy smoke was also reported.

Despite the hazardous conditions, firefighters made significant progress, and by approximately 1:13 a.m., emergency reports indicated that all visible flames had been knocked down.

Searches throughout the building were completed, with no occupants found during those operations.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage have not been confirmed.
