Authorities are investigating an attempted burglary at a Jersey City firehouse early Friday morning while firefighters were away battling a brush fire.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred at approximately 3:35 a.m. at Jersey City Fire Headquarters, located at 465 Marin Boulevard.

Authorities said a suspect allegedly broke into the firehouse and attempted to steal equipment while crews were out responding to a brush fire elsewhere in Hudson County.

Fire department personnel reportedly detained the individual until police were notified and responded to the scene.

The incident was reported as an interrupted burglary. By approximately 3:56 a.m., responding units were advised that the situation had been brought under control.

The burglary occurred as Jersey City and other Hudson County firefighters were assisting with an extensive brush fire along the cliffs near Hoboken and Union City. That fire response temporarily affected nearby train operations as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

Additional information regarding the suspect and any charges was not immediately available.

The incident remains under investigation.
