A Woodbury man has been sentenced to three years in state prison after admitting to assaulting a woman during a violent incident last year, authorities announced.

According to information released by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, Jose Velez, 39, was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Judge Kevin T. Smith after previously pleading guilty to third-degree aggravated assault and violating probation.

The Prosecutor’s Office identifies its Trial Team as handling most criminal matters following indictment in Gloucester County.

Authorities said the case stemmed from a November 27, 2025 incident when a 43-year-old woman contacted Woodbury Police and reported that Velez had attacked her outside her residence.

According to court records cited by prosecutors, the woman reported that Velez strangled her until she nearly lost consciousness.

She further reported that the assault continued over the next several hours, during which she was repeatedly kicked and struck.

Under the plea agreement, Velez received a three-year state prison sentence for aggravated assault. He was also sentenced to 365 days for the probation violation, with that term running concurrently with the three-year sentence.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Bryant Flowers and Assistant Prosecutor Kylie Finley represented the state.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns credited the Woodbury Police Department for its assistance with the investigation.
