New Jersey State Police are leading the investigation into a pedestrian strike that left a person seriously injured on Interstate 280 in Essex County late Friday night.
According to preliminary information, emergency responders were dispatched shortly before midnight after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck on I-280 near exits 13 and 14 in Newark around 11:35 pm.
Police requested EMS to the scene for the injured pedestrian. The extent of the victim’s injuries was initially unclear, but preliminary reports indicated the person suffered serious injuries.
As the investigation continued, authorities closed three right lanes and the right shoulder of the highway. The incident was initially reported on the eastbound side near Exit 14, with subsequent information placing the investigation on the westbound side near Exit 13.
New Jersey State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Additional details, including what led to the pedestrian being on the interstate, have not yet been released.
