A Freehold Township man has been sentenced to five years in state prison for a 2022 drunk-driving crash that killed a 69-year-old pedestrian along Route 9 in Old Bridge.
According to information released by Middlesex County authorities, John DeTulio, 41, was sentenced August 28 by Superior Court Judge James Hoebich in connection with the death of Old Bridge resident Harvey Berse.
Authorities said the crash happened at approximately 1:25 a.m. on January 28, 2022, near Route 9 and Ferry Road.
Investigators determined DeTulio was driving at a high rate of speed and under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle struck and killed Berse.
DeTulio pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular manslaughter on September 3, 2025.
In addition to the five-year prison term, which is subject to New Jersey’s No Early Release Act, DeTulio received a nine-year driver’s license suspension.
