Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Irvington man in Newark’s South Ward Monday evening.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Royce Asaad Lamont Westry, 21, of Irvington, was shot multiple times in the area of South 16th Street on Monday, August 17.
According to information obtained by RLS Media, the shooting occurred at approximately 5:36 p.m. in the 700 block of South 16th Street.
Preliminary information indicated that a male reportedly entered a residence and fired multiple rounds at Westry.
EMS responded and rushed Westry to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:19 p.m.
The Shooting Response Team and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office were notified and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
No information regarding a possible motive or suspect was immediately released.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
