BREAKING: Four-Alarm Belleville Fire Spreads to Multiple Homes, Forces Evacuations

Belleville

By: Richard L. Smith

A massive four-alarm fire tore through multiple properties in Belleville early Thursday morning, prompting evacuations, mutual aid from surrounding communities and an intense firefighting operation complicated by water pressure problems.

The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. at a private residence at 1 Laurel Court, near Perry Street.

Initial reports indicated heavy smoke was pouring from the home before conditions rapidly deteriorated.

Flames reportedly spread from the basement and extended into trees and a wooded area behind the property, threatening nearby homes.

As firefighters battled the growing blaze, flames extended to a detached garage at 17 Maier Street and later threatened 3 Crescent Terrace.

Police began evacuating neighboring residences as a precaution.

The incident quickly escalated from a working fire to multiple alarms as additional firefighters and equipment were requested.

Crews encountered significant water supply and pressure problems while attempting to establish additional hydrant connections.

Multiple hose lines were placed into operation as the fire continued to spread.

Newark firefighters were among the mutual-aid companies called to assist Belleville crews.

At approximately 3:49 a.m., the original fire building suffered a partial collapse. Minutes later, reports indicated the rear portion of 1 Crescent Terrace had collapsed, prompting additional companies to respond and a recall of off-duty personnel.

Firefighters also reported flames showing from 3 Crescent Terrace, and that building was evacuated as crews worked to prevent further extension.

By approximately 4:10 a.m., the incident had reached four alarms, with Belleville officials requesting mutual-aid companies initially assigned to cover the township to respond directly to the fire scene.

Additional assistance was requested to provide coverage elsewhere in Belleville.

Downed power lines were also reported in the area, further complicating operations.

One person, initially reported as possibly a police officer, experienced chest pains during the emergency and was transported to a hospital.

Their condition was not immediately available.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, and officials have confirmed no other injuries.
