Nutley police are warning residents to remain vigilant after an elderly resident was victimized in what authorities describe as a utility impersonation scam that resulted in the theft of cash from her home.
According to the Nutley Police Department, the incident occurred yesterday when a man knocked on the woman’s door claiming he was “with gas and electric supply.”
The suspect told the resident he needed to inspect the home because of a possible gas leak.
Believing the story, the resident allowed the man inside. Police said the suspect walked through every room of the home before leaving about 10 minutes later.
The following day, the resident discovered that a sum of cash had been taken from her wallet.
Police have released photos of the suspect and are asking anyone who recognizes him or has information about his identity to contact the Nutley Police Department at (973) 284-4940.
Authorities are also reminding residents that criminals frequently pose as utility workers to gain access to homes, particularly those of older adults.
To help prevent becoming a victim, police recommend:
- Always ask to see a utility worker’s official photo identification before allowing them inside your home.
- If you were not expecting a visit, contact the utility company directly to verify that an employee was dispatched to your address.
- If anything seems suspicious, do not allow the individual inside and contact your local police department immediately.
Nutley police urge residents to share this warning with elderly family members, friends, and neighbors, who are often targeted by these types of scams.
