Belleville officials are urging residents to stay away from the intersection of Chestnut Street and Franklin Avenue after powerful storms brought down an energized power line that is actively arcing, creating an extremely dangerous situation.
The dangerous conditions are part of a line of severe thunderstorms moving across New Jersey, producing torrential rainfall, flash flooding, and hazardous travel from Edison through Newark, Belleville, Paterson, and other communities across North Jersey.
The storms are expected to continue impacting the region through approximately 8:30 p.m.
Belleville Mayor Frank Velez issued an urgent public safety alert, warning motorists and pedestrians not to approach the area or attempt to drive or walk through the intersection until utility crews have secured the scene.
Across the region, emergency responders are dealing with flooded roadways, rapidly rising water, and dangerous travel conditions.
Flash flooding can develop within minutes, trapping vehicles and placing lives at risk. Never attempt to drive through flooded streets or around barricades.
If you’re traveling this evening, slow down, use extreme caution, and avoid unnecessary trips if possible.
Watch for flooded roads, downed trees, and fallen power lines, and choose alternate routes whenever necessary.
