Somerset County's Chief of Detectives Charged with Assault in March Crash

Authorities in Morris County announced that Francisco Roman Jr., 54, has been charged in connection with a March vehicle crash in Somerville, following an investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll and Chief of Detectives Robert McNally announce that Roman is the Chief of Detectives for the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office. Roman is currently suspended without pay from the position.

MCPO officials said that on March 20, Roman was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, owned by Somerset County, on South Bridge Street in Somerville. It is alleged that Roman struck a parked Mercedes-Benz.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz and a passenger sustained injuries. Also, as a result of the collision, three additional parked vehicles sustained damage, according to Morris County officials. 

Somerville Police officers responded to the scene. Roman is alleged to have shown signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for driving while under the influence, Morris County officials say. 

At the Somerville Police station, Roman was issued a citation for driving while intoxicated and released, MCPO officials stated. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office subsequently assumed this investigation.

According to Morris County officials, following the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office investigation, on June 8, Roman was charged with two counts of fourth degree Assault by Auto.

Roman was charged on a summons complaint, processed, and released pending a court appearance, Morris County officials said.
