Paterson police searched area hospitals and canvassed a neighborhood Tuesday night after a burst of gunfire erupted in the city, authorities said.

Just before 9 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Hamilton Street and East 23rd Street after three separate ShotSpotter activations detected gunfire in the neighborhood.

Responding officers secured the area and launched an investigation. During their search, police discovered a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire on William Street.

Preliminary information indicates that the ShotSpotter system detected at least 19 rounds fired during the incident.

Despite an extensive search of the area and checks at local hospitals, police did not locate any victims.

Investigators continued gathering evidence at the scene as they worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The incident remains under active and ongoing investigation. No arrests have been announced.
