Bergen County

A Garfield police sergeant has been charged with witness tampering after allegedly attempting to influence the outcome of an internal affairs investigation, according to information released by Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

Prosecutors said the charge against Anthony M. Pizzi, 30, stems from an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Confidential Investigations Unit.

Authorities said the investigation began on April 16, 2026, after the Prosecutor’s Office received information alleging that a witness had been improperly influenced during an administrative investigation being conducted by the Garfield Police Department.

According to investigators, Anthony Pizzi, who serves as a sergeant with the Garfield Police Department, contacted a Garfield police officer and instructed the officer to provide false information to internal affairs investigators.

Prosecutors allege the purpose of the communication was to alter the facts and influence the outcome of the departmental investigation.

Following the investigation, Pizzi was arrested on May 28 and charged with third-degree witness tampering.

He was subsequently released pending his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office did not disclose additional details regarding the underlying internal affairs investigation.
