The City of Newark is mourning the sudden loss of longtime Newark Police Detective Fritz Magny, who died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency while on duty, city officials announced.

Detective Magny, 62, was a respected member of the Newark Police Division for more than three decades, serving the city for 31 years in a variety of patrol and investigative roles.

According to Newark officials, Magny was found collapsed in a parking lot near 31 Green Street at approximately 3:10 p.m. on May 28. He was transported to University Hospital for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead at 8:34 p.m.

In a statement, Mayor Ras J. Baraka expressed condolences to Magny’s family, friends, and fellow officers.

“This noble public servant spent the last three decades of his life honorably serving the people of Newark,” Baraka said, noting that Magny’s dedication to public safety and professionalism left a lasting impact on the city.

Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. described Magny as a distinguished and highly respected officer whose assignments included service in the South, Central, and West Wards, as well as the Special Victims Division/Megan’s Law Unit. His most recent assignment was with the Criminal Intelligence Bureau.

Officials said Magny was widely regarded as a kind-hearted colleague and loyal friend who earned the respect of those who worked alongside him throughout his career.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by the family. The Newark Police Division and city officials continue to extend their prayers and support to Detective Magny’s loved ones during this difficult time.
