Authorities in Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred overnight in Newark’s South Ward, according to preliminary information. 
Police were alerted to multiple rounds of gunfire around 7 pm Friday night in the 30s block of Leo Place in Newark.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Detectives assigned to the homicide unit canvassed the area for evidence while working to identify and locate a suspect.
Authorities believe the victim may have known the individual responsible, though the nature of that relationship has not yet been determined.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.
