A Union County Sheriff’s Office officer died Friday morning following a crash, authorities confirmed.
Officials identified the officer as Joseph DeVito. Details surrounding the incident were not immediately released, as the crash remains under active investigation by the New Jersey State Police.
State police typically handle serious crashes on major roadways across New Jersey, including highways such as the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, and interstate routes.
A spokesperson for state police was not immediately available for additional comment Friday night.
In a statement, Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli said the department is mourning a significant loss.
“We are devastated by the loss of Officer DeVito,” Corvelli said. “He was not only a valued member of our department, but also a respected colleague and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Law enforcement agencies across Union County, including the Elizabeth Police Department, also expressed condolences as the investigation continues.
