Authorities in Newark are asking for the public’s help locating a man wanted for questioning following a shooting last month, according to a statement released by city officials.

Nahji S. Mayes, 29, of Newark, is being sought after he was injured in a shooting on March 20, 2026.

Police responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 8:46 p.m. in the 70 block of Baldwin Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found Mayes on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to his right leg.

Officers immediately rendered aid, applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until Emergency Medical Services arrived. Mayes was transported to University Hospital for treatment.

Authorities said Mayes told officers he was struck by gunfire while taking out the trash.

Investigators are now seeking to speak with Mayes as part of the ongoing investigation, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. urges anyone with information on Mayes’ location to contact the Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS.
