A night of skating in Newark’s North Ward quickly spiraled into chaos Monday evening when a large gathering of juveniles became unruly, prompting multiple law enforcement agencies to shut down the Branch Brook Park skating rink near Clifton Avenue.

Initial reports indicated that the situation escalated around 7:30 p.m., when officers were called to the area for reports of a physical altercation that grew increasingly volatile.
As officers attempted to disperse the crowd, teens reportedly disregarded repeated commands to leave, and the atmosphere became unsafe for police, patrons and nearby residents.

Law enforcement officials reported that juveniles began throwing rocks, bottles, and chunks of ice at officers and passing motorists along Clifton Avenue.
The growing crowd — estimated between 300 and 400 individuals — spilled into surrounding streets, creating additional safety concerns.
The Essex County Sheriff’s Office was joined by Newark Police, NJ Transit Police, East Orange Police, and New Jersey State Police in what became a coordinated response to regain control.
Officers deployed OC spray, and Newark Police issued a citywide assistance call as units worked to contain and disperse the crowd.
With conditions deteriorating and objects continuing to be thrown at law enforcement, officials made the decision to close the skating rink for the remainder of the night to restore order and protect public safety.
Authorities were able to bring the situation under control within approximately 30 minutes. No serious injuries were reported.
The incident remains under active and ongoing investigation.
