Just after 4 a.m. on November 14, 2025, the city’s ShotSpotter system alerted police to shots fired near the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue.

Officers responded within minutes, combing the surrounding streets for clues.

Their search led them to the 300 block of Leslie Street, where they recovered two 9mm shell casings, marking the start of an active investigation into what unfolded in the quiet predawn hours.

As detectives work to piece the incident together, they are looking to speak with 29-year-old Azaiah Baynard as part of their inquiry.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. is asking residents to assist by sharing any information that may help move the investigation forward.

Anyone who knows Baynard’s whereabouts — or has details that could aid police — is urged to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS.
