Shooting in Newark's East Ward Under Investigation

Newark Police detained multiple individuals Thursday morning following a shots-fired incident in the city’s East Ward.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire near Route 21 and Chestnut Avenue. 

When units arrived, they recovered at least one shell casing at the scene. 
 

A thorough search of the surrounding neighborhood revealed no victims.

 

According to preliminary reports, a Jeep with out-of-state plates was seen speeding away from the area moments after the gunfire. 
 

Officers later located and pulled over the vehicle, taking its occupants into custody for questioning.

The incident remains under active investigation, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether the individuals detained are directly responsible for the shooting. 


No injuries were reported.
