A Camden County police officer is recovering after being shot late Tuesday night during an incident that unfolded near the intersection of North Chesapeake and Congress Roads in Camden, officials confirmed.
According to information posted by CBS News and Camden County authorities, the shooting occurred shortly before 11 p.m., prompting a large law enforcement response.
The injured officer was immediately transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition, alert, and speaking with medical staff.
Investigators believe the officer’s bulletproof vest likely saved his life, as the bullet appears to have ricocheted off the vest before striking his arm.
Camden County Police Chief Gabe Rodriguez provided an update early Wednesday morning while the officer was undergoing evaluation.
“There is some bruising on his chest, so it does appear that a round did strike the vest,” Chief Rodriguez told CBS News.
“I don’t know if it’s the same round that entered his arm, that’s all part of the investigation.”
Police have recovered a weapon from the scene, though the motive and circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
Authorities have not released the officer’s name but confirmed he has served with the department for nearly two years.
The suspect was taken into custody a short time later, police said.
Camden County officials praised the rapid response of first responders and expressed relief that the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.
