A Paterson man has been sentenced to five decades in state prison for a deadly shooting that took place in 2024, authorities said.

According to information released by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, 41-year-old Jimmy Mercedes received a sentence on October 28, 2025, from Superior Court Judge Joy-Michele Roche.

Mercedes was ordered to serve 40 years in New Jersey State Prison, with 38½ years to be served before parole eligibility, consecutive to an additional 10-year term, five of which must be served before parole.

Mercedes was convicted by a jury on August 21, 2025, following a trial that began with jury selection in late July.

After two days of deliberations, jurors found him guilty of murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain persons not to have weapons.

Prosecutors said Mercedes shot  Daryle Robinson twice on May 5, 2024.

Surveillance footage captured portions of the incident, including Mercedes leaving the scene shortly after the gunfire.

He was taken into custody on May 10, 2024.

Mercedes will remain incarcerated in state prison, with parole eligibility extending decades into the future.
