Morris/Essex Line: Derailment Near Summit Disrupts NJ TRANSIT Service

NJ TRANSIT officials confirmed that a non-passenger work train derailed late Friday night near Summit Station, forcing the suspension of service on the Morris & Essex rail line.

According to statements released by NJ TRANSIT, the slow-speed derailment occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on September 26 just east of the Springfield Avenue bridge. 

 

The train was carrying supplies and equipment used for track and infrastructure maintenance.

 

No customers were aboard, and the crew members reported no injuries.

 

As a result of the incident, Morris & Essex service is suspended in both directions. 

 

Gladstone Branch trains are operating only between Gladstone and Summit.
 

To accommodate affected commuters, NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by NJ TRANSIT buses and participating private carriers.
