Firefighters swiftly responded to a commercial blaze that broke out Wednesday afternoon along 16th Avenue, displacing several residents and affecting two neighboring storefronts.
According to information released by the Newark Department of Public Safety, the fire was reported around 4:00 p.m. on August 6, 2025, at a business located at 287 16th Avenue.
Flames quickly spread to the adjacent property at 289 16th Avenue before crews were able to bring the situation under control by 4:32 p.m.
No injuries were reported, but four adults and two children living in the residential space above the first business were forced to relocate due to the fire damage.
Authorities said the cause and origin of the blaze remain under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.

City officials have not yet released the names of the affected businesses or the residents displaced, but emergency services and local agencies are working to provide support.
