Police are investigating a violent overnight shooting in Newark’s North Ward where over 40 rounds of gunfire erupted, injuring two individuals and damaging homes in the area.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. Saturday when a ShotSpotter device detected multiple rounds near Bloomfield Avenue and North 3rd Street, close to Branch Brook Park.
Responding officers arrived to find a crime scene stretching across Lake Street, marked by dozens of shell casings.
Two victims were discovered suffering from gunshot wounds, with one reported to be in more serious condition. Emergency medical services rushed both to the University Hospital for treatment.
During their investigation, police found several homes struck by bullets.
Units from multiple precincts assisted at the scene while Newark’s Shooting Response Team took the lead in the investigation.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and authorities are actively searching for the suspect or suspects involved.
