Gunman Fired Nearly Two Dozen Rounds at Victim in Overnight Newark Shooting

A man is fighting for his life following a violent shooting in Newark’s South Ward late Monday night, according to preliminary information released early Tuesday.

Authorities say a ShotSpotter device detected approximately 23 rounds fired near 376 Avon Avenue at around 11:50 p.m. 

Police arrived quickly and secured the scene, where they found a male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds and several vehicles damaged by gunfire.

The victim, who was unconscious and unresponsive, received emergency treatment at the scene before being rushed to University Hospital. 

As of early morning hours, he remains in a 'life-threatening' condition.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified and is actively investigating the case. No arrests have been made, and the shooter remains at large.
