Authorities in Middlesex County are investigating a suspicious fire that seriously injured at least two people in a Perth Amboy home late Tuesday night.

Emergency crews were called to 330 Prospect Street around 10:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire.

Upon arrival, police and firefighters found flames coming from the kitchen of a large single-family home.

Firefighters quickly entered the building and discovered two individuals suffering from severe burns. The victims were airlifted to a New Jersey burn center for treatment and remain in serious condition.

Crews were able to swiftly bring the fire under control, limiting damage to other parts of the house.

Preliminary findings from the investigation revealed a gas can inside the kitchen, which may have ignited or exploded.

Authorities have not yet determined why the gas can was present in the home, and the incident remains under active investigation.
