Bloomfield Township officials are strongly disputing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s recent classification of the township as a “sanctuary jurisdiction,” calling the designation both “misleading and disappointing.”

According to a statement released by Bloomfield, the Honorable Mayor Jenny Mundell, the township operates as a Fair and Welcoming Community that fully complies with all federal and state laws, including the New Jersey Attorney General’s directives on immigration enforcement.

“We categorically reject the false narrative that respecting our residents’ constitutional rights and humanity are somehow at odds with public safety,” the mayor stated. “In fact, they are central to it.”

Mayor Mundell emphasized that community trust is essential to effective public safety.

He said fear of deportation can prevent residents, especially those in immigrant communities, from calling police or emergency services, which puts the entire township at risk.

The mayor clarified that Bloomfield’s policies do not prevent lawful prosecutions or interfere with federal immigration authorities who are operating within constitutional bounds. Instead, the approach reflects a focus on inclusion, civil rights, and neighborhood safety.

“Local law enforcement officers are not immigration agents,” the mayor said. “Our resources are focused on keeping Bloomfield safe for everyone who calls it home.”

The statement reiterated Bloomfield’s commitment to standing with all residents, regardless of immigration status, and rejected what township officials described as attempts to politicize public safety.

“We remain open to dialogue with state and federal partners,” Mayor Mundell added, “but will always uphold the values of justice, equity, and dignity for all who live here.”
