Early Morning Gunfire Erupts Near Newark West Ward Charter School

Newark police are searching for a suspect who opened fire near a charter school in the city’s West Ward early Friday morning.

According to a preliminary investigation, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 1:10 a.m. in the area of 34 Ashland Street. 

When units arrived, they discovered shell casings near KIPP Rise Academy, located in the former St. Rocco's School building.

Police secured the area and conducted a thorough canvass of the scene. No victims were found, and there were no reported injuries. 

The suspect fled the location prior to police arrival and remains at large.

Newark’s Shooting Response Team responded to the scene and is leading the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Newark Police Department.
