In observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office held a heartfelt ceremony to honor individuals and families who have shown exceptional resilience and advocacy in the aftermath of crime.
According to a statement released by Ocean County officials, the event highlighted this year’s NCVRW theme: “Kinship, Connection, and Healing” — a call to uplift survivors through community support and compassion.
Among those recognized were the Pabst and Heist families, who have transformed personal grief into positive action.

After experiencing tragic losses linked to domestic violence, both families dedicated themselves to raising awareness and supporting other victims.
Their efforts include fundraising for local services that aid survivors, demonstrating a powerful commitment to healing and helping others.
The emotional ceremony included a tribute to first responders, acknowledging the vital roles played by law enforcement, fire personnel, and victim advocates.
Special appreciation was given to Victim Witness Advocate Melody Kirby, Atlantic City Police Department Detective Mitzi Cruz, and Chief Counsel John Flammer for their unwavering dedication and empathy during some of the most challenging moments in the lives of victims and their loved ones.
Atlantic County Prosecutor William Reynolds delivered remarks during the event, emphasizing the office’s continued pledge to center victims and families in every aspect of the justice process.
“Behind every case is a human being—a life affected by trauma, and a family seeking closure,” Reynolds said.
“At the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, we stand alongside victims, not only in the courtroom but throughout their journey toward healing. We are committed to pursuing justice relentlessly, while ensuring survivors are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.”

The Prosecutor’s Office reaffirmed its ongoing mission to ensure fairness for crime victims and their families, and to create an environment where their stories are acknowledged, their voices heard, and their healing supported every step of the way.
