Two Men Captured for Newark South Ward Shooting That Had NJ Transit Driver Swerve Away from Gunfire

Newark

Authorities in Essex County announced the arrests of two males wanted for a violent shooting episode in Newark's South Ward.

According to county officials, Mr. Quashawn Davis, 21, of Irvington, and Mr. Hakir Hodges, 25, of Newark, both were arrested on Wednesday without incident.

County officials said both suspects face separate charges in connection with the investigation of a shooting incident that occurred in the 300 block of Lyons Avenue on October 23.

Preliminary information at the scene indicated that at approximately 4:40 a.m., residents in Newark and Hillside notified their departments of several rounds of gunfire near Lyons Avenue.

When officers from both municipalities checked their sides of the border, Newark Police came across a blood-scattered, and bullet-riddled car near 347 Lyons Avenue, and the driver of one of the cars slammed into the NJ transit bus.

Officers securing the area found two victims suffering bullet wounds, but their conditions were reported non-fatal. Both individuals were rushed to University Hospital under police guard.

A witness at the scene told RLS Media that the bus driver attempted to safely maneuver around suspects who repeatedly fired weapons from a vehicle and into another car.

Stuck in the middle of the violent exchange, the witness said the quick-thinking bus driver pulled over to the side when both cars were driving the wrong way on Lyons Avenue engaged in repeated gunfire.

Shooting

Fifteen passengers were walked -by emergency responders- the short distance to Beth Israel Hospital, where medical professionals observed.

No injuries were confirmed, according to NJ Transit.
