Participants attending a playoff basketball game inside Branch Brook Park sought cover after hearing gunfire erupt on the Clifton Avenue side of Branch Brook Park late Thursday night.
According to officials at the Essex County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 9:35 p.m, a male gunman fired several rounds in the area prompting a police response.
Newark and Essex County Officers arrived and found evidence that a shooting occurred, but after searching the area, no victims were found.
Essex County Sheriff's officials said while police investigated at the scene, they were notified by University Hospital that a possible gunshot victim arrived in the emergency room seeking medical assistance.
When officers arrived at the hospital, they found the windows shot out with glass and shell casings inside the car.
Essex County Sheriff's officials said as of late last night, they believe the victim was struck by flying glass when the suspect fired into the vehicle.
The suspect fled the scene and is at large.
