An early morning shooting that severely injured a male in Newark's West Ward is under investigation by authorities.
Police say at approximately 12:50 a.m., gunfire rang out on Mount Vernon Place, rushing police to the scene to investigate.
Upon arrival, police found an unconscious and unresponsive male suffering multiple gunshot wounds at that location.
Police say emergency responders provided CPR to the unidentified male before rushing him to University hospital in critical condition.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified of the shooting while police searched the area for other possible victims and suspects.
There were no other injuries reported.
