Single-Car Crash In Linden Leaves Driver Critical After Car Ignites

The Linden Police Traffic Bureau is presently investigating a serious, single car crash that occurred last night at approximately 6:59 p.m. 

The vehicle, a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, was traveling south on Lower Road heading towards Rahway when it left the roadway and struck a PSE&G utility pole, according to police.

Police said that upon impact, the vehicle reportedly caught fire. The driver, a 67-year-old Tadeusz Smakolski of Edison, was still inside. 

Chris Hennie and Eric Rios, employees of DAS, located at 1600 Lower Road, contacted 911 and pulled Smakolski from the vehicle, extinguishing the fire with an extinguisher from the business.

Members of the Linden Police and Linden Fire Departments treated and transported Smakolski to UNDNJ University Hospital in Newark, where he is still listed in critical condition.

The Linden Police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash and there are no charges pending at this time.
