Police said a woman suffered severe injuries after she came under heavy gunfire in a Newark South Ward neighborhood on Tuesday night.
According to Newark officials, it happed around 7:04 p.m. in the vicinity of 832 South 15th Street.
Police say frantic residents dialed 911 after a gunman arrived in the area and fired nearly a dozen rounds using what is believed to be a rifle.
Officers arrived, secured the scene, then found the unidentified woman suffering a bullet wound in her leg that passed through the lower extremity then struck her other leg.
She was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover. Police recovered about 10 shell casings at the scene, but no other victims were found.
The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and remains at-large.
