Man Shoots Mother Inside Newark Central Ward Home

Newark

Police officials in Newark are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

According to a statement from Newark Police, at approximately 2:40 p.m, police responded to the The New Community Estates located in the 300 block of Fairmont Avenue to investigate reports of shots-fires.

Police officials said several officers arrived at the scene found an unidentified woman inside an apartment suffering bullet wounds.

The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according to Newark Police.

The Essex County Sheriff's Office sent a K-9 unit to the scene to search several blocks for a weapon after residents told RLS Media that the suspect is the victim's son.

He ran from the scene immediately after the shooting residents said.

Newark Police officials stopped short from identifying the suspect as a relative and would only say the incident is in its early stages of the investigation.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office told RLS Media that the incident did not result in a homicide investigation and referred all questions to Newark Police officials.

There were no immediate reports of arrests.

The motive behind the shooting has not been released by police at this time.
