A retired Union City cop shot an alleged armed man during his shift as a security guard in Newark early Saturday morning.
According to police, the retired officer was working as a security guard at UPS - located on Gould Avenue- around 4:30 a.m., when two people — armed with handguns — pulled up to the officer's vehicle in a white pick-up truck.
One of the men approached the retired officer on foot, at which time the officer opened fire striking the man several times, according to police.
The unidentified man was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
The second individual fled the scene in the white pickup truck, according to police.
The suspect remains at large.
The individual's weapon was recovered on the scene, but the second person fled in the white pick-up truck and remains at large. It is not clear if the second person was struck by the gunfire, authorities said.
The identity of the retired officer and the victim are being withheld at this time.
No word on whether police have identified the individual that fled the scene.
