Police in Newark are on the scene of a shots fired incident with a confirmed connection on an occupied vehicle in the city's South Ward at this time.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of a car which had two children inside stopped in the 100 block of Avon Avenue for a short time when gunfire struck the vehicle just before 12:10 p.m.
Police units arrived at the scene and found the vehicle, but there were no injuries reported.
The suspect who fired the gun fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Social media reports that the shooting happened inside the nearby shopping mall are false and unfounded. Police have the plaza entrances blocked for the investigation. Shoppers are parking their cars at another location and walking into the shopping center.
Avon Avenue between Irvine Turner Boulevard and Badger is closed to traffic.
