Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a shooting incident in Newark this afternoon, in which three people were shot, one fatally.
A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said the incident occurred near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Alexander Street shortly after 2:00 p.m. Newark police officers responded to this area on a report of a shooting. Arriving officers located three male victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the victims, Zoungo Sou-Oud, age 34 of East Orange, NJ was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:39 p.m. The other two victims, one 33 and the other, 22 years old, were rushed to University Hospital, where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities said that identities of the surviving victims are not being released at this time. This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is ongoing at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
Preliminary information indicates that Mr. Sou-Oud was working at a car wash when he was shot and that he was not the intended target of this shooting, according to Fennelly.
