UPDATE: Police Identify 28-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot in Newark’s South Ward

Essex County authorities identified a man who was gunned down in the city’s South Ward on Saturday night.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the 200 block of Renner Avenue at approximately 11:25 p.m. where officers arrived at the scene and found a badly injured male suffering gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified the male as Mr. Alfred Johnson, 28, of Newark who was rushed to University Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after.

Authorities say the investigation is active, ongoing, and no arrests have been made.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
