Seperate Overnight Shootings Leave One Critical, Another Seriously Injured; Weekend Closes With About Six Injured, Three Fatally by Gunfire

Newark

A violent weekend in Newark came to an end early this morning but not before two additional victims were seriously injured by gunfire in separate incidents overnight.

Gunfire rang out in the 1000 block of South Orange Ave. in the city's West Ward around 2:30 a.m. sending police rushing to the scene where a crime scene investigation was immediately established after police found several shell casings, but no victim at that location.

A victim suffering gunshot wounds was transported by private vehicle to University Hospital a short time later reportedly in "poor" condition. It was believed that the victim was injured at the South Orange Ave. shooting scene.

Police are on the search for the suspects that fired several rounds of gunfire in the 20's block of Willoughby St.  around 1:30 a.m. in the city's South Ward. A male victim was taken to University University Hospital where he was  struck in the leg and seriously injured. EMS transported another victim at that location to the hospital suffering an injury, but not a gunshot wound.
It was not immediately clear if the two incidents are connected.

The shootings closes the weekend out with about seven people injured, three fatally injured by gunfire in the city.

An investigation is underway.
