Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting on Saturday night in Newark, NJ. The incident occurred in the area of 620 Bergen Street shortly before 9:00 p.m.
Newark police officers responded to this area on a report of a shooting and observed a male, lying outside at this location, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:23 p.m. The identity of the victim is unknown at this time.
This will make the third homicide that has occurred in the city in less than 48-hours. Police found a man shot on Riverside Ave. Friday evening and another victim shot Saturday morning on Elizabeth Ave. Both men died from their injuries.
This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is ongoing at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
